Fireworks and a Cheer for Life: Israeli Citizens Delight at Deal Bringing Back Hostages
The declaration regarding a deal expected to lead to the freeing captives detained in the Gaza Strip for more than two years has caused delight and comfort throughout Israel.
A group which has campaigned for the release of Israeli captives held in Gaza expressed “profound gratitude” for what it termed a “landmark achievement”.
The deal—still requiring approved by the Israeli war cabinet—involves the release of 20 living hostages and the bodies of 28 dead hostages in exchange for 250 Palestinian detainees imprisoned for life in Israeli prisons and 1,700 detainees from the Gaza region.
To date, 148 captives have been returned—largely through previous ceasefire deals—51 bodies have been retrieved and eight hostages were freed by rescue.
Jubilant Scenes at Hostages Square
Joyous gatherings took place at Hostages Square located in Tel Aviv as hundreds of people gathered before the deal being signed.
A crowd began clapping and moving to music under American and Israeli banners—a female attendee holding up a placard that read: “We adore Trump.”
“It’s a magical day,” the woman said.
Another, 50-year-old Yael, cried as she watched the crowd dancing.
“I’m very excited—it’s such a relief,” she stated. “We need to see their return home to their loved ones.”

Relatives Rejoice Using Pyrotechnics
The mother and sister of a captive Israeli Matan Zangauker lit fireworks in celebration of the news of his impending returned home.
“They’re coming back!... Matan is coming home!” Einav Zangauker exclaimed while holding her daughter.
Viki Cohen, the mother of captive Israeli Nimrod Cohen, posted on social media: “My child, you are coming home.”
The delight was palpable throughout the avenues of Tel Aviv after the news.
Released Captives Say Prayers and Raise Glasses
Former British-Israeli hostage Emily Damari celebrated alongside another released captive Romi Gonen, reciting prayers of gratitude, then cheering “To life”, which means “for life”. She has been campaigning for the release of her companions, twins Gali and Ziv Berman.
Their brother Liran Berman posted: “My Gali and Ziv, I love you so much. You are coming back.”
Gil Dickman’s cousin Carmel Gat was captured in October 2023, with her remains found in a tunnel in Gaza nearly a year after. He has been joining other captives’ relatives in advocating for an agreement which ensures the homecoming of all those still being held in Gaza.
“I can’t quite believe this is real. We’ve been waiting for so long and here it is,” he expressed.
He said he was “shattered” that Carmel will not be among those returning home but was “glowing with joy” for the relatives of the captives who are at last returning.
Eitan Horn was seized from Nir Oz kibbutz in southern Israel together with his sibling.
Cautious Optimism from Relatives
Dalia Cusnir, whose relative by marriage Eitan Horn remains captive in Gaza, remarked she felt like she was living “a dream state”.
“We’re more than grateful to President Trump and all he has done on our behalf. It seems like it might be the start of the conclusion of this ordeal, and hugging Eitan feels closer than ever,” she commented.
But she cautioned that it was still too early to rejoice.
“Until the last hostage returns, we won’t open the champagne. We will continue struggling... until the end,” she affirmed.
“So many things might occur until the last moment which is why we’re being so, so careful. We simply wish to express gratitude to all who was involved in the efforts and make sure this agreement is done... We will celebrate only once we have the last hostage back home.”
Eitan was captured from kibbutz Nir Oz in southern Israel along with his brother Iair, who was freed from detainment through a truce agreement earlier this year.
