Unmasking Venezuelan Celebration Videos and AI Images of Maduro.
Synthetic graphics claiming to show Nicolás Maduro in custody following his capture by the American authorities have amassed tens of millions of impressions online.
How AI Images of Maduro Appeared Soon After
The first fabricated AI image apparently showing him led off a aircraft circulated a brief time later. This image was unpublished by any verified US channels; rather, it was published on X by an account purporting to be an “AI video art enthusiast”.
Our analysis used Google’s SynthID, which found the picture was created or altered with Google AI.
More AI-generated visuals started circulating in the ensuing hours, seemingly depicting more angles of Maduro detained. Discernible identifying marks on the graphics indicate they came from an Instagram profile named ultravfx.
AI analysis confirms all of these pictures were likewise generated or edited Google AI.
Real Photo Released but Fabrications Continued
Donald Trump released the genuine photograph of Nicolás Maduro in handcuffs aboard the US Navy ship on that morning. But even after this real photo was made public, AI-generated images persisted online but were updated to include the grey tracksuit seen on Maduro.
Reverse image searches indicate these altered fabrications were originally uploaded on the video platform by a graphic design profile. Once again, the AI-watermark detector says these subsequent pictures were created or altered generative artificial intelligence.
Important Facts:
